Peter has over twenty years of technical and leadership experience in Information Technology, including the development of secure hosted services for the transportation industry as well as designing and managing networks in the utility and defense sectors. In addition to his role at TSF, Peter is Founder and Principal of Raleigh-based Datasages Consulting Group LLC, a firm dedicated to providing enterprise management services to industrial and transportation customers. In this role, Pete is often called upon to lend expertise to large scale transportation projects. He has been a material contributor to the implementation of Positive Train Control in the United States, particularly as it applies to security and availability in a hosted environment and has patents under way related to this work..
Prior to entering the technology industry, Pete served as an Army officer in various operational and staff roles in the US Army Special Forces, including six years on a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha (SFODA). In this capacity, he developed a deep appreciation for the complexity of developing and executing the security and back up plans necessary for a successfully completing a mission and ensuring the safe return of all personnel.
Pete's approach to security is heavily influenced by his military experience. It grants him a unique perspective that focuses on system hardening as well as mitigation and resiliency. Defense in depth, cell structure security, message based architecture and discardable resources are concepts that Pete strongly advocates with his security conscious clients.
Pete has been responsible for the deployment of several large enterprise management systems, focusing on high availability and secure networks, including the ground network for the International Space Station. He has been asked to lead various Red Team efforts, including full mission profile penetration testing of transit authority trail control systems.
He is a renowned speaker and thought leader on issues of Internet security, system management, trustless systems, and privacy. He has been asked to speak to various groups, including the Unites States Secret Service on the topic of network and cyber security as well as the resiliency of trustless systems such bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.. Peter has also served as an advisor to the committee for network security at the American Public Transit Association.
Under Pete's leadership, The Sixth Flag was recently named to CRN's 2015 Top 25 Emerging Vendors and to its Top 10 Emerging Cloud Vendors. In October 2015, Pete was named among CRN's 100 People You Don't Know But Should.
Peter holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1990).
